Chris Berg

Christopher Berg, OOT pianist-extraordinaire, has composed many, many songs, on texts and poems by many authors, from Benjamin Franklin to Gertrude Stein, Abraham Lincoln to Frank O'Hara, Madame de Sevigne to Vladimir Nabokov. His O'Hara songs prompted a reviewer in the American Record Guide to call him "an American Hugo Wolf," citing his ability to illuminate the inner meaning of texts with his subtle harmonic language. His songs have been performed around the world, and, in New York, notably by the New York Festival of Song. Self-taught as a composer, he nevertheless counts among his mentors composers Robert Helps (with whom he studied piano), Noel Farrand and Richard Hundley. He has composed many works for The Mirror Visions Ensemble, and has performed with the group in the U.S., the U.K. and France. His musical, "Back Home" was produced at the 2007 New York Musical Theater Festival. Opera on Tap premiered his two-minute opera "The Last Laugh," a dramatization of an exchange between Winston Churchill and Lady Astor at its 2008 Oktoberfest. As musical director and arranger, he recently completed a run of Wendy Kesselman's chamber musical, "The Black Monk," featuring Austin Pendleton. Recordings of his music (including one featuring Elaine Stritch and an English horn played by NY Philharmonic principal Thomas Stacy) can be found on the Albany, Music Masters, MHS and Cala labels. In addition to his musical activities, Christopher also is an actor (he once played in "The Sea Gull" with Joe Namath) and has appeared as "dancer" with Keigwin & Co. in "Bolero NYC," soon to be revived.
